City of Orihuela & Orihuela Costa
The city of Orihuela is situated in the province of Alicante, 59km southwest of the city of Alicante and 25km inland from Torrevieja. The population is 78.000. Religion has had a huge influence on the history of Orihuela, and has left some magnificent old architecture. Orihuela has an extensive artistic heritage, thanks to its long and eventful history. The old part of the town was declared an area of artistic and historic monuments in 1969. It contains buildings of the towns’ nobility, some of which have been declared Cultural heritage.
Orihuela has the highest number of museums in the province of Alicante, for example the Archaeological museum and the Easter museum. There are also five National Monuments worth seeing.
The centre of Orihuela is situated tightly between the mountains and river Segura. There are lovely alleys with numerous little shops. The river flows through the city, dividing the old and the new parts. The municipality extends to the coast as Orihuela Costa.
Orihuela Costa boasts 16km of beaches with for instance La Zenia and Dehesa de Campoamor. There are also 3 golf courses: Villamartín, Las Ramblas and Campoamor.
The surrounding agriculture mainly consists of lemons, oranges, almonds, olives, palm trees, pomegranates, cotton, hemp and vegetables. Silk, wool and canned foods are important local industries.
